Here’s what Rudy did, and you can, too:

  1. Your dream is something that will stick with you for a long time. Rudy wears a gold Notre Dame helmet as a six-year-old — even though he’s teased for it. Your dream will stay with you, even if you in no way fit the profile of the “natural” at what you want.

  2. Prepare for your dream and give love to it — save money for it, learn about what is involved in succeeding, feed your dream with your love and attention. Even if you have to start by doing all this while working at a job you hate. (Rudy works for years at a steel mill.)

  3. There might be a galvanizing incident that makes you finally go for it (in Rudy, his best friend believes in him and gives him a sort-of magical talisman — a Notre Dame varsity jacket — and then, this friend, his only supporter, dies in a factory accident

  4. Reach out to the right people — Rudy goes immediately to meet and talk to the right people as soon as he arrives at Notre Dame. He speaks about his dream as if he is worthy of it. A priest gives him full tuition for a semester at a nearby Catholic college and promises him additional free semesters, if he gets good grades. He introduces himself to the famed Notre Dame coach, tells him his story, and declares his intentions and explains the practical steps he is already taking to attend Notre Dame. He makes a memorable impression because of his sincerity.

  5. An honors student sees a girl talking to Rudy and incorrectly thinks that Rudy must be good with girls. He asks Rudy to be his wing man, but Rudy doesn’t really know any girls. However, he seizes the opportunity and says, “Maybe I do know some girls. In fact, I know a lot of girls. I just gotta find them.” Now he’s actively trying to meet and be helpful to girls on campus to fulfill the deal, and in exchange, gets free tutoring from the honors student. So now he has all the help he needs to bring up his grades.

  6. Learns from his tutor that he has dyslexia and learns how to deal with it so that he can pass a literature exam. (And, he learns that this is why he was unable to get good grades in high school.)

  7. Offers to work for free for the groundskeeper at the stadium, just so he can “get the lay of the land” and be part of the team in some way. He’s offered minimum wage (instead of volunteering) so now he has a job.

  8. When he goes into the locker room to do some maintenance, he soaks up every bit of the atmosphere. He reads inspirational plaques on the wall aloud, calls out the names of famous players who once had these lockers, and stands on a stool and recites Knute Rockne’s famous team pep talk from memory.

  9. He’s crafty — but he also gets help. Rudy notices a cot in his boss’ office and sneaks his way in late at night to have a place to sleep. (Eventually his boss leaves him a key and blanket.) Then, his tutor gets him a free meal pass. All his immediate needs are suddenly taken care of.

  10. You might start whining and moaning and acting like a victim at some point, and someone who never even had the opportunities you have had might have to smack you upside the head with some tough love to get you to stay on the path by reminding you of how much you have truly received already through this process.

  11. Then you get some positive signs that you are actually on the right track. Rudy was finally accepted to Notre Dame and the football team — not as a player on the field, but on the prep team as a “walk-on”, a human tackle dummy for first- and second-string players to practice on. You have to show your heart and soul some more.

  12. No matter how much he’s beaten, his response is always, “I can do it, coach!” Is he crazy, or is he manifesting what he wants?

  13. He gets in some trouble along the way by “making everyone else look bad” because of his bordering-on-insane work ethic, but ultimately gains the respect of everyone on the team. (But still no respect from his own family.)

  14. Ask for the chance to shine. His family doesn’t believe he’s part of the team, and the only way he can prove it is to be on the roster for at least one game. So, he begs the coach to be put in at least once in his senior year, and the coach agrees. But, then, a new coach replaces Coach Parseghian, and all bets are off, until . . .

  15. When your desire and heart can no longer be denied, miracles happen. His team members threaten to quit if Rudy is not allowed on the bench for the game. They force new coach Devine’s hand and, in the final seconds of play, Rudy sacks the quarterback of the opposing team. Rudy’s family, in the stands, go crazy and finally believe in him.

  16. Rudy graduates and sets an example for five of his siblings to also get a college education. And, just in time, as factory jobs dry up soon afterwards. So, he not only lives his dreams, but also gets a college education, and saves his family’s future, as well. What is is that you want to do? Use this list as a how-to manual to get there.
