What Positive Affirmations Are

Positive affirmations are powerful statements that you repeat to yourself regularly with the intention of reprogramming your subconscious mind.

They are based on the principle of self-affirmation theory, which suggests that people can change their beliefs about what is possible and through this, actually change their lives. When you consistently recite affirmations, you replace negative thought patterns with positive ones, thereby shifting your beliefs and perceptions.

Studies demonstrate that people who practice positive affirmations experience reduced levels of stress, increased feelings of self-worth, and greater motivation to pursue their goals. By harnessing the power of neuroplasticity, affirmations help create new neural pathways that empower us to change our lives in ways we might not have believed possible.

Powerful Daily Affirmations and How to Make Them Work

Maybe you know some people who have “tried affirmations” and say that they don’t work.

Affirmations are not something you try for a day or two. Affirmations are something you are. They are the part of you that connects with source energy, and source energy is always wanting to help you. But it can’t get through to you when your own thoughts are acting as an impenetrable shield that won’t let your dreams come true.

Here’s what to do to make affirmations work for you:

  1. Believe in your chosen affirmation as if it has already happened. You are decreeing it to happen. With your affirmation, you are saying: “This is how I see myself. This is what I want. Bring it to me. Bring me the circumstances. Bring me the knowledge. Show me exactly what to do next. I know this belongs to me. Show me what to change. Remove the obstacles. I am ready. Right now.”

  2. Consistently repeat your affirmation throughout the day, starting when you wake up and ending when you go to sleep. Do your repetitions in a relaxed, fun way. You can sing them, make them rhyme . . . whatever brings a smile to your face and makes the repetitions fun and relaxed. This way the new patterns of thought and emotion enter your subconscious mind and start to manifest as measurable reality.

Measurable reality means that you can measure the changes, you have measurable evidence that things are changing the way you want them to.

  3. Make sure that you can believe in your affirmation right now. If you have inner resistance every time you say it, tweak it to something you can currently believe about yourself that is also positive and rooted in the now. Visualize yourself being the person in your affirmation. Feel how it feels to be that person and live that life.

  4. Take inspired action. As you continue to work with your affirmation, people, things, and ideas will come into your consciousness or fall into your lap. Follow up with these inspirations. Do what they suggest. Live in that new reality. Walk, step-by-step into that reality.

Affirmations are the catalyst that moves you toward changes you must make or actions you must take so you can have exactly the love, security, money, fulfillment, experiences, health or whatever you are manifesting.

  5. Be flexible and know that you will receive what you’ve asked for, but it may come in a different package than you expect. You will recognize that it’s happening by the way you feel. If you’re becoming less angry, less frustrated, or less depressed, it’s working. The fulfillment of your affirmation may come in a different form than you expect, but it will give you the feeling or the state of life that you’ve been affirming. It will come in the form that is most perfect for your well-being and happiness, even if it doesn’t come quite in the way you expect.

  6. Setbacks are part of the process. Nothing is going wrong. Check in with your emotions every time you’re repeating your affirmation throughout the day. If you have an emotional setback and go back into self-defeating ways of thinking, it’s ok — nothing is ruined. Just notice it and reset yourself to the new “normal” that you were experiencing before the setback.

Results can be fast, if you continue to remind yourself of what you want in life and continue to consciously take your attention away from what you don’t want or from “how things have always been.” Fill your life with these new beliefs.

  7. Appreciate everything you’re doing to lift yourself up, and appreciate the good things that are already in your life. If you’re reading this, you likely have been born with advantages that most people in the world do not have — even if it doesn’t feel that way right now. The universe responds to your thoughts and actions, whether positive or negative, and continues to send you what you think about all day, whether you want that or not.

If you focus on what’s already good in your life, you will magnetize more. Love and appreciate your own efforts and progress, even if it seems small, and treat yourself with kindness and compassion even if, at the moment, others aren’t treating you that way.

  8. Play the “I love my . . .” game. As you wake up each morning and as you go to sleep at night, enumerate all of the things you love: your pillow, the dinner you ate last night, the inspiring movie you watched, the food in your refrigerator, that favorite trip you took ten years ago, upcoming events you’re looking forward to . . . just say them as you notice them throughout your day.

You’ll be surprised at how many little things you really love about your life. Give it a try. Also: Plan in advance some things you’ll do each day to make yourself happy. I make a list of nice things I’ve done each day, so even on the worst day, I can look at that list and say, “Yes, ok, it was hard, but . . . I also did happy x, y, and z things.”

  9. Weed your garden (figuratively). If there are people in your life who always bring you down, find ways to minimize your time with them. Fade them out of your life. If you must see them, create an aura of protection around yourself so that they have no power over you, your self-concept, or your ideas.

369 Manifestion Method: Here’s What Works Better

The 369 manifestation method became popular a few years ago and the process is simple: Choose an affirmation and repeat it (or write it down) three times in the morning, six times in the afternoon, and nine times at night. Most sources suggest that you repeat this process for 21 days in order to see results.

I have tried this, and . . . I believe the results will be disappointing for most people. Here’s why:

  • People tend to focus on the power of the numbers 3, 6, and 9, rather than on focusing on their intention. Intention is everything when it comes to affirmation.

  • Repetition of affirmations needs to be continuous throughout the day, and needs to run on its own in your mind (after many, many conscious repetitions) and become a part of you. Repeating it a total of just 18 times a day does nothing.

  • Such a small number of repetitions over just 21 days is not enough to make a real change in your subconscious mind. When this technique doesn’t work for you, it might make you think that affirmations, in general, don’t work. And that’s just not true.

Here’s what to do instead:

If you like the concept of speaking or writing your affirmation a certain number of times a day, try this technique that has definitely worked for me and for many of my clients.

  1. Get a special journal for the purpose of writing your affirmations. Make it a small one that you can carry with you everywhere. Give it a title that appeals to you and encourages you, such as “My Dreams Come True.”

  2. Get a pen in a color that harmonizes with your intent. You might already have a pen in this color. Green for money or health, red for love, pink for friendship, orange for positivity and freedom from depression, blue for inner peace and freedom from anxiety . . . .

  3. If you like the idea of numerology turbo-charging your work, I suggest 88. It energetically draws to you good fortune, positivity, and success.

  4. In the morning, write your affirmation 22 times.

  5. Throughout the day, every time you think of it, write your affirmation a few times. You can do this when you’re in the bathroom, drinking coffee, putting on makeup, eating, riding the train, sitting at your desk, watching tv . . . . And, just before bed, write however many repetitions you have left in order to reach 88.

  6. As you experience positive signs that your affirmation is working, journal about the evidence you are accumulating.

  7. Do this for 88 days. If you backslide and forget, you do not have to start over from the beginning. Just pick up where you left off.

  8. Once you have completed a total of 88 days, let me know what happens. (Of course, you may receive your manifestation even sooner.)

Most people will go to this level of affirmation only if there’s something they really want to manifest. But that’s the point, right? If there’s nothing you really wanted to change, you wouldn’t have read this far!

This process keeps your affirmation in your mind all day long, and gives you a feeling of accomplishment as you see the pages of affirmations accumulating and document the proof that it’s all working in your favor.

I encourage you to give this a try. It may seem like a lot of work, but let’s do the math.

If you choose an affirmation that takes 30 seconds (or less) to write down one time, it will take you a total of 44 minutes (or less), spread out throughout the day, to write it 88 times.

For example, here’s a way you could do it (these three bullet points add up to 88 repetitions):

  • 11 minutes first thing in the morning = 22 written affirmations

  • 5 minutes x 5 times during the day = 50 written affirmations

  • 4 minutes at bedtime = 8 written affirmations and you’re done for the day

Or, even quicker, try this:

Record your own voice saying the affirmation 88 times, and repeat along with your recording until you complete them (even faster than writing, and you can play your recording in the background while you work or do other activities).

Or, really want to make miracles in your life fast? Do both: handwriting and audio.

How to stay motivated:

Every 8 days, check in with yourself to see whether you feel better and whether the situation has started to move in the way you wanted it to.

If yes, that’s reason enough to keep going. If you’re not seeing any progress yet, ask the universe to send you an unmistakable sign — or guidance for your next step.

The Science Part: Why Affirmations Work

Positive affirmations are designed to challenge and replace destructive self-talk with beliefs that support people to get unstuck from early conditioning, generational beliefs, and their own negative experiences over a lifetime. Affirmations operate on the principle of cognitive restructuring, which involves identifying and modifying maladaptive thought patterns.

By repeatedly affirming positive beliefs, you can rewire your brain and enlist its help to access the life changes that you want.

The effectiveness of positive affirmations can be attributed to:

  1. Self-Affirmation Theory: When confronted with threats to their self-esteem or identity, such as failure or rejection, people can choose to practice self-affirmation to restore their sense of worthiness and competence. Positive affirmations are a form of self-validation, bolstering our confidence and resilience when things go wrong.

  2. Neuroplasticity: When we repeat positive affirmations, we activate neural pathways associated with the desired beliefs and behaviors, strengthening these connections over time. As a result, positive affirmations can facilitate lasting changes in mindset and behavior, which can be a total game changer from anything you’ve experienced before.

  3. Confirmation Bias: The human brain has a tendency to seek out information that confirms pre-existing beliefs and filter out contradictory evidence. When we focus on negative beliefs, we’re using confirmation bias against ourselves. This is what most people generally do — often for their entire lifetimes.

But, we can choose to reverse confirmation bias in our own favor. By consistently affirming positive beliefs, we become more attuned to experiences and opportunities that align with those beliefs. We start to believe in and expect good things, and this increases our motivation to pursue our goals and desires. Or allow them to pursue us.
